CCD Chip Introduction

A CCD(charge coupled device) composed of thousands of individual pixels with a tiny 1/2", 1/3", even 1/4" chip. Each pixel responds to light falling into it by storing a tiny electricity charge. The pixels locate on a precise grid which consists of vertical and horizontal transfer registers sending the signals to the CCTV cameras's video processing circuit. This transfer of signals occurs sixty times per second.
Currently, The 1/3" CCD chip becomes the most popular sensor format, the dimensions are 4.4mm (horizontal) and 3.3mm (vertical) and 5.5mm (diagonal). The 1/4" sensor format which is 4mm (diagonal), 3.2mm (horizontal) and 2.4mm (vertical), is widely used in color cameras. The Electronic Shutter of CCD chip plays a leading role to produce a wonderful and reliable picture.

CCD and CMOS(complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensors are the different digital technologies for capturing image. They both have strengths and weaknesses in various applications.
